Hello All,

As you know, First 5 is the largest single funder of Family Support services in California. Now its existence is threatened through the 1D ballot measure.  If Proposition 1D, passes on May 19, 2009 over $1.6 billion will be cut from First 5 funded programs across California – programs that served 868,000 children last year.

Hey Community Conveners – Here is a message From SF Safe Start about trainings they do around violence prevention for kids 0-6 years of age.

Hello and happy holidays,

I am writing to introduce myself as the new Outreach and Education Coordinator for the San Francisco SafeStart Initiative. My director, Mr. Larry Yip, provided me with your contact information as someone who might be interested in arranging a training or outreach event at your agency. We are doing a survey of programs in the San Francisco community that serve families with young children to see what the staff development and training needs may be regarding child exposure to violence. I hope that you will be able to assist us in this endeavor by completing the attached survey and returning it via email, fax, or post at your earliest convenience. Ideally we would like to roll out a new training curriculum shortly after the New Year, so a timely response would be much appreciated.

Hi Convener Network.
Hope this message finds you in good spirits. I wanted to let all of you know that Michael Cushing, a Steering Committee member of the Northwest Convener Initiative, has resigned from his position as Executive Director of Community Learning Center. As a result, he will no longer be a part of the Convener Initiative. We wish him the best of luck in his new adventures!
Sincerely,
Angela Tsang

On February 20, 2009 the Department of Children, Youth & Their Families must present Mayor Newsom with its Fiscal Year 2009-10 Budget showing $3.3 million in General Fund reductions and an additional $3.3 million of budget reduction contingency proposals. These are over and above the $1.8 million Budget Reductions for 2008-09. This is the DCYF “fair share” of the overall City projected deficit in the General Fund, which is now $576 million. In addition, DCYF must propose 6.34% reductions in Children’s Fund allocations. DCYF staff and the Children’s Fund Citizen’s Advisory Committee are hard at work establishing future funding priorities.

• On February 12, 2009, the Children’s Fund Citizen’s Advisory Committee will continue it discussion of budget reductions. The public meeting will be Thursday, February 12, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at DCYF, 1390 Market Street, Suite 900.

I am looking for any agency in the Richmond who would be interested in opening up a Food Pantry. The Richmond is home to more than 88,000 residents.  Of those, one in seven people live with the daily threat of hunger.  11,907 individuals live at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty line. Of these, 1,533 are children and 2,523 are seniors. 955 families with children live with the daily threat of hunger.

In 2007, a family of four falls below 150 percent of the federal poverty line if it earns less than $30,975 per year.  However, with San Francisco’s high cost of living, many low-income families earn well above this figure but are still in need of food assistance.

There are only two pantries open to the public (RDNC and ST. John’s) in the Richmond. Additionally, we only have three programs aimed for help for the seniors (Richmond YMCA, Menorah Park and RDNC). To give some perspective, in the Mission we have 9 open pantries, 15 pantries run through the school systems and 17 programs for seniors.

I cannot stress how underserved the Richmond community  is. Any help would be appreciated. Conversely, if any agency has space but not volunteers or vice versa, please contact me as well. Perhaps a coalition of agencies is needed to open another food pantry in the Richmond.
