5 Ways Your Organization Can Help First 5

Hello All,

As you know, First 5 is the largest single funder of Family Support services in California. Now its existence is threatened through the 1D ballot measure. If Proposition 1D, passes on May 19, 2009 over $1.6 billion will be cut from First 5 funded programs across California – programs that served 868,000 children last year.

What can your organization do to help protect California’s children and families by opposing Prop 1D? Remember it is ALLOWED that 501(c)(3) organization work on a ballot measures. It is considered “direct lobbying,” but it is ALLOWED. Familiarize yourself with more details at:

5 Ways Your Organization Can Help First 5

1. Sign up for updates at the websites and download advocacy materials at www.stop1D.com (a campaign organized by the CA Child Abuse Center) and www.noonproposition1d.com (a campaign organized by the State First 5 Association.)

2. Have your Board officially endorse No on 1D, using the endorsement forms on the websites mentioned above.

3. Come to the San Francisco fundraiser on Monday, 4/20, 6-7:30pm hosted by Norman Yee (invite attached).

4. Put an article in your newsletter to inform your constituents about what Prop 1D would mean.

5. Add the No on 1D logo and links to your e-mail signature (attached).

CHILDREN’S BUDGET HEARING

English, Spanish and Chinese flyers are attached!!!

Next Wednesday, on April 29, the Board of Supervisors will be holding the most important budget hearing of the year on funding for children, youth and families. It is so important that we turn out to make sure that the Board hears from the community as they make tough choices about the budget.

Here is the plan:

At 2:00pm the hearing begins and we will be hearing presentations from city departments
At approximately 3:00pm the public testimony will begin.
We will be giving everyone stickers, and flags to present to the Board. The flags will say something like “Invest in the Next Generation” on one side, and everyone (youth, parents, providers) will have the opportunity to decorate the other side, with their vision for the next generation of SF (what youth want to be as adults, what parents see for their family in 5 years, etc.). This will also allow folks to engage in something while testimony is going on…
Everyone should fill out speaker cards when they get there (Chelsea will be there to coordinate) and even if not everyone is planning to give a long testimony, everyone will have the opportunity to walk up, introduce themselves, their neighborhood/organization and present their flag to the Board (we will have a script available for those interested).

We are asking everyone to please arrive as close to 3:00pm as possible (if not earlier). Please let me know how many people you are bringing, and what time you plan to arrive!!!

Our Overall Message:

Stop the attack on the set-aside funds for Children and Public Education, and instead support Coleman’s alternative set-aside reform proposal!

Youth Development Peer Network is Offering a Series of Events to Support Staff

Howdy Youth Workers:

The Youth Development Peer Network has been busy at work pulling together youth workers from all across the Bay Area to produce a number of events and resources. We know that this is a busy time of year for you, so we are offering many different ways to get involved, get connected, and CELEBRATE! Check out www.ydpn.org for more info!

Here are a couple of our most recent and inspiring offerings:

A Day of Rejuvenation and Self Care CURRICULUM – Crafted with love by Sangita Kumar, Margaret Bacon Schulze, Victoria Welle, and moi, A Day of Rejuvenation and Self-Care is a three-hour workshop that youth workers can do with their peers, youth, and families. It explores what rejuvenation and self-care mean and how they show up in our lives through different art-mediums. The curriculum is completely free and downloadable on www.ydpn.org.

We Are Youth Workers 3-Day Extravaganza (June 10 –12) – The YDPN is honored to be hosting 20-25 youth workers from Indiana June 10-12. To celebrate their arrival and all of our accomplishments this year, the YDPN is pulling together a number of collaborators to honor YOU! This three-day event includes an Exhibition and Happy Hour (June 10 in San Francisco), a Networking Day (June 11, location TBA), The Red Carpet Festival (June 11, 7pm to 10pm in Oakland, CA), and Site Visits (June 12) including a Funders, Youth Philanthropy, and Youth Worker Mix and Mingle. Youth Worker Brown Bags: Community and Connectedness (April 27) – While each of the Youth Worker Brown Bags focus on specific issues that affect youth workers and their jobs, one objective of every session is to meet new people, have lively conversation and inspire each other to think about youth work in a creative and supported environment. Youth workers need to rely on their community network for professional and personal support, funding, best practices and organizational collaboration. That is why April’s Brown Bag Topic is CONNECTEDNESS AND COMMUNITY.

“HUGE CHILDREN’S BUDGET HEARING

Wednesday, April 29, 2:30pm
City Hall, Board Chambers (Room 250)

Every year, the Board of Supervisors holds a huge budget hearing- usually in June- where folks have the opportunity to testify in front of the Board about programs and budget priorities. THIS YEAR, we are working closely with Supervisor John Avalos- the Chair of the Budget and Finance Committee- to have a budget hearing SPECIFICALLY on funding for children, youth and families, earlier on in the process so we can have more influence!! This is the opportunity both to weigh in about budget cuts to services AND to let City Hall know that we will NOT let them touch the Children’s Fund or Prop H!! Please put this in your calendars- this is a huge turnout opportunity and will be important that we show the power of our numbers!! For more information, contact Chelsea.

OTHER UPDATES:

Stimulus Money in San Francisco

Today, the City launched its website on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act at http://recoverysf.org/intranet/RecoverySF/. The site will be a clearinghouse for information on federal stimulus funding for San Francisco, including funds that S.F. has applied for and received, and public hearings related to stimulus funding.

Controller’s Three Year Budget Projection Report
Last week, the Board held a hearing on the Three Year Budget Projection Report from the Controller, Budget Analyst, and Mayor’s Budget Office, which is now available at http://www.sfgov.org/site/controller_index.asp. The report provides updated expenditure and revenue projections looking forward through FY 2011-12, assuming no changes to current policies and staffing levels. It estimates a deficit of $438 million in the upcoming fiscal year, $615 million in FY 2010-11, and $746 million in FY 2011-12. To the extent the city adopts ongoing budget solutions in each year, that would reduce the deficit for the following year. The projections are based on numerous assumptions around the length of the recession, receipt of stimulus funds, state budget cuts, labor’s willingness to reopen current contracts, the COLA negotiated in expiring labor contracts, increases in health insurance costs, and more. See the report for details. The next significant report in the budget process will be the Controller’s nine-month budget status report in early May”.

Excel is Now Accepting New Proposals for Excel Afterschool Funding
